This report grew out of a workshop sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) in Arlington, Virginia, on April 17-18, 2008. The two-day workshop, attended by approximately 60 participants, sought to develop and validate a strategy by which to assess the value of NSF's investment in broadening participation across all directorates and programs. Invited participants represented the following constituencies: NSF grantees, professional evaluators, and the policy community (which included representatives from Congress, the Office of Management and Budget [OMB], NSF staff, and staff from other federal agencies). Many of the workshop participants and other invited guests reconvened in December 2008 to hear about and discuss the progress being made in developing a report based on the April workshop. The December half-day meeting offered an opportunity to refine the ideas laid out by the authors engaged in developing the final document.View External Website
