A theme that came up repeatedly during a symposium on improving the representation of women and minorities in the science pipeline was what sociologist and civil rights activist W. E. B. Du Bois called "twoness": the idea that whites and minorities perceive and experience two different worlds, two different sets of expectations and circumstances. Achieving ethnic, racial, and gender parity in the science pipeline will require measures that help white and minority graduate students, and their mentors, better understand the world they each live in, the panelists said.View External Website
If We are serious about increasing the diversity in STEM and academia, we need to talk more about the reality of cultural and personal values in our professional lives, and to find ways to continue to advance in our profession as well as change perceptions for the better. Unless women minorities feel empowered and capable of balancing both through concrete institutional policies and practices, we will continue to lose out on talent and innovation. This new study from Yale University reveals the pervasive bias against female STEM students in higher education by professors of both genders. Implications include less mentoring of female students, fewer job opportunities, and lower pay. Science in the Moment (SciMo) is a 3 year research study funded by the National Science Foundation at Northern Illinois University. The purpose of SciMo is to provide a descriptive account of what a variety of high school science contexts feel like from the perspective of female and male students. The overarching theoretical and conceptual perspectives for the study include: (1) Self Determination Theory focuses on the importance of students' cognitions in learning around issues concerning autonomy and competence. (2) Emergent Motivation Theory is branch of the field of positive psychology, focused on the important role of affect in learning. (3) Women's ways of knowing suggests that females and males may approach academic learning, including learning science, differently because of identified differences in how girls and boys are socialized to assume socially-sanctioned gender roles, and societal expectations for males and females academic performance. This paper reports on the research and recommendations of the CSTA (Computer Science Teachers Association) Teacher Certification Task Force, and addresses the crisis in computer science teacher preparation and certification.
